What frames and mounts do you recommend?
For a few years I mounted in a mid grey (18%) on the advice of Ansel Adams. This does tend to make the focus the image. But many people don’t like the grey mount.
Now days I usually mount in a cream mount with a minimum 3 inch border in a thin black frame. This is how photographs are usually framed in National or State Art Galleries. The photographs look stunning. It is also regularly utilized by the Print Room at the Photographers Gallery in London.
Alternatively, I sometimes use a dark thin wooden frame instead of the black aluminum which is equally beautiful.
It is very important to ensure that the mount, backing board and mounting methods are archival quality and museum quality. This usually means that they are not only acid free but also buffered against future attacks from anticipated chemicals.
Personally I prefer hinge mounting, as this preserves the print for future owners in the most undamaged state. Some people dry mount their prints, I tend not to do this as it is preferred, by collectors, that the print remain as undamaged as possible. There are plenty of arguments that support dry mounting if done correctly, so I am happy to do it as a special order. Photographs dry mounted remain perfectly flat in their frames.
